How’s your work week going? Following on from Monday’s listening post where I’m asking you what you’d like to see here on BusiChic, I’d like to introduce you to blogging friend Yishan Chan of Beauty Swatch!
Yishan and I went to uni together and it’s been lovely to reconnect through our respective blogs. It can be pretty isolating working a day job then working on a blog into the wee hours of the night so I really appreciated it when Yishan read my LBD Project reflection post then reached out when she read that I need help with my eBook – what a star! Similar to me, Yishan works in banking and recently published her first book Pout Perfect to help women navigate through the beauty jungle to find lipstick colours and textures that suits our skintones and lifestyles. So clever!
Why did you start Beauty Swatch?
Ever since I started following beauty blogs, I found myself becoming more confident in purchasing beauty products online that one would typically prefer to buy in-store. To decide on lip colours, I would google for other bloggers’ “swatches” of the product to get an indication of whether it might suit me.
One night after fruitless hours of searching for a lip colour swatch, I decided I was going to build the world’s largest online colour library of lip colours across different skin tones and age groups.
I chose to specialize in lipstick since finding the right shade of lipstick can be overwhelming especially in store, with so many to choose from & trying samples can be unhygienic. For this reason, countless women tell me that they end up purchasing similar shades to what they already own to be safe, yet are inspired by celebrity trends and advertisements. Beauty Swatch aims to help women find the shade & formula they are looking for, whether it be the perfect nude or coral, in a satin or velvety matte finish.
I had the pleasure of reviewingYishan’s eBook,Pout Perfect, and learnt so much about the myriad of lipstick textures that are now out there- from “satin” to “moist shine”! Peout Perfect features tips from make-up experts in the industry but Yishan really is a subject matter expert and I learnt things that I hadn’t read in other magazines or books. What really makes the book is that Yishan has photographed her own lips beautifully so that we can clearly see the difference between each of the textures- none of this product being featured on a model who has been photoshopped so that the product looks differing IRL!
I am a total groundhog when it comes to the lipstick I buy because of mistakes I’ve made with impulse buys in the past. Armed with the knowledge from Yishan’s book, I really do feel empowered and inspired to try out new lipstick shades and textures. Stay tuned over the coming weeks to see how I apply the knowledge I’ve learnt to find new lippies to rock at work!
Want Yishan to Beauty Swatch your pout?
What’s even more exciting is that Yishan has an event at Mecca Maxima on Friday and Saturday this week to help you find your perfect shade! Go Yishan!
– hey, maybe you could bring your mum along as part of her Mothers’ Day pressie 😉
Now before we run out and work new lipsticks, here are Yishan’s basic tips to help us to prepare our lips prior to wearing lipstick.
Yishan Chan’s tips for prepping lips to achieve the Pout Perfect:
Stay hydrated & drink plenty of water throughout the day.
Apply a rich layer of lip balm while applying your face makeup. Your lips will soak in the moisture & be smooth by the time you apply lipstick.
Be gentle when exfoliating lips. The safest method is to rub them gently after a hot shower to help the flakes lift off.
Yishan’s key tools and products in her prefect-pout-toolkit
1. Lip brush (My favourites are Bobbi Brown and Shu Uemura)
2. A lip balm that doesn’t slip under lipstick (e.g. Nivea Lip Butter)
3. Cotton tips to fix any bloopers
– Thanks Yishan! As I wear a lot of matte lipsticks which can be very drying, I’ll be adhering to these tips to keep lips in prime condition!
There will also be an Instagram competition where one lucky participant could win a $200 Mecca voucher – check out the T&Cs on Beauty Swatch!
