Business Chic staple: Milano knitwear

Need the formality and polish of the corporate suit but looking for something a little less stiff?

Milano knitwear is the solution for you!

The tightly knitted fabric comes in jackets, tops, dresses and skirts creating comfortable and stretchy workwear that does not compromise on the formality of a traditional suit. Dresses and skirts in milano knit are usually form-fitting which means that seamless (or control) underwear under skirts and dresses are a must. If that sounds too difficult then opt for a milano knit top. Whichever piece you use, style back with quality basics to create a luxe (aka expensive-looking) ensemble.

The best knits are made using merino wool (or at blends) which has thermal as well as cooling properties, making the knits comfortable to wear all year-round but particularly valuable as an alternative to the traditional suit in the warmer months.

Here’s a look at some styles currently in-stores with ideas on how to style them for the modern day bureau:

business chic scanlan theodore

Scanlan & Theodore makes some of the best milano knitwear on the market. I guide clients towards a classic palette of navy, black, sand and grey (where available) although this fashion forward cobalt colour would be fabulous both racetrack-side as well as the office.

business chic office style outfit layout

Structured top: top saba | pants Country Road | earrings Angle Diamond Dot (also comes in sterling silver) | bag asos | shoes Lucy Choi London at Net-a-Porter | eyeshadow pencil nars | lip gloss pencil nars

Milano knitwear creates a chic silhouette playing well with your existing wardrobe staples. If the office aircon is on high I like to make sure that I’ve layered a Bassike single top underneath my knitwear to create a layer of scrumptious cotton that further insulates.

I like playing up the polished element with ladylike make-up like these nars pencil products that are so easy to apply – literally swipe the pencil across your eyelid and blend in with your finger. The lipstick pencil requires a little more precision but just a little is all you need for a pretty lip.

If the look feels a little bit too “lady” then these edgy stud earrings by Angle Diamond Dot should balance things out.

business chic career girl outfit

Feature skirt: trench coat Sportsgirl | top Portmans | skirt Portmans | eye shadow pencil L’Oreal | lip gloss L’Oreal | Contour powder L’Oreal

Asymmetrical skirts are popular this season and this number by high street chain, Portmans, ticks another trend in being monochrome (fancy fashion speak for “black and white”). Keep the look work-conservative by pairing with a classic trench coat or sub the top for a simple blouse in white, black or colour.

I recently attended a L’Oreal event where we were gifted product that I HAVE SINCE FALLEN IN LOVE WITH. L’Oreal has an eyeshadow pencil that’s similar to the nars one as well as products that create a polished Kim-Kardashian look – contour powder and my-lip-but-better lipgloss that is moisturising and comfortable to wear. business chic knitwear outfit sports luxe

Sports Luxe: top Oroton | ring Kailis Jewelery | skirt Scanlan & Theodore | bag Seed Heritage | matte lipstick pencil nars

Love the sports luxe look? Milano knitwear lends itself to the trend when paired with sportsy details like the relaxed grey knit and perforated-panel bag.

Again make the look luxe, by pairing with a great lip and BusiChics will know that a great red never disappoints!
