A first job interview outfit

I captured today’s BusiChic fresh from a job interview on one of Melbourne’s sweltering hot days. Emma had interviewed for a role as a Receptionist in the fitness and had all of the lovely, happy nervous energy of someone who really wanted the job; very endearing.

So how do you work out what to wear to a job interview? You don’t get a second chance at making first impressions and with about 70% of in-person communication being visual, you want to impress upon the interviewer that you *get* the company and are a good fit for it. You could ask a friend if they have some already working in the industry, but there’s also no need to be stealth about it; it’s a legitimate question and asking it shows that you want to be able to demonstrate that you are keen and will ask questions to help you do your job and be a good representative of the company so simply do as Emma did, “I asked the HR representative what dress code I should adhere to and just went shopping!”

Emma wears Dotti shirt, Portmans jacket, Country Road skirt, Wittner shoes and Tilka earrings

Stud earrings are not distracting and Emma shows some personality with these druzy crystal numbers from Tilkah.

A fresh amount of perforated detail on Emma’s skirt, “I love this skirt, I wear it all the time and I really love portmans for workwear that isn’t too boring!”

If you applying for a role in a conservative office and aren’t used to wearing more formal closed-toe heels (I know that I wasn’t when fresh out of uni and my uniform of sandals/sneakers), take inspiration from Emma’s footwear. It’s a great idea to commute to your interview wearing more comfortable shoes than stiff ones that will hurt your feet and have you hobbling into the interview- particularly in Summer! Discreetly switch shoes by popping into a nearby cafe rather than changing while waiting for the interview.

How did you work out what to wear to your first job interview and what did you wear?
