Love letters to Melbourne

Dear Melbourne, so I’m not posting daily but I want you to remember that you are full of amazing. As such, here is a series of mini-love letters or postcards which I hope that you will read very slowly to soak in the goodness that this city has to offer. Love.

Do it in a [school] dress

Will you DO IT IN A DRESS?

One Girl is a Melbourne-based team of awesome folk who want to support 1,000,000 girls through education by 2020, believing that Educating a girl has a multiplier effect. Invest in a girl, and she’ll do the rest. Over the weekend I had the chance to photograph men and women in school dresses for One Girl’s campaign DO IT IN A DRESS. The Do It In a Dress campaign asks everyday folks like you and me to do it something you do as normal but IN A SCHOOL DRESS! The ideas is for family and friends to donate to the cause which raises the funds needed to send girls in Sierra Leone to school.

How you can help:
1. Register here to make something a little crazy by doing it in a dress, for a great cause!
2. Are you a designer? We’d love if you could help to customise a school dress which will be one of 30 worn by One Girl’s Chantelle Baxter over the month of September. email me at cheryl or comment on this post and we’ll get in touch!

A great cause, will you do it a dress?

State of Design
State of Design is the state of Victoria’s Design Festival On NOW until Sunday 31 July – there are lots of events featuring both established and emerging designers, chefs, thought leaders and crafters! Here are some snaps from the work I’ve seen on display:

Made to Measure - Treadlie magazine's exhibition of bicycles for all different types of lifestyles from sporty cyclist to chic chick!

PhD candidate and Busyman Mike Peel has put together a conceptual study in designing clothing for movement, specifically for riding bicycles. On display at the Endless Gallery – a new space for all things cycle-ace. Here are some close ups of my favourite details that I’d like to see go into production:

A study in jacket-mobility, designed for movement and flair.

A frock unzips to reveal reflective panels, for the ultimate in practical-but-stylish cycle chic! The work of RMIT student, whose details I missed help??

The Design Files Live Talk
Melbourne’s favourite design blog, The Design Files, hosted a live talk with three very amazing Melbourne women which attracted an audience of some of my favourite Melbourne design talent.

Pictured (clockwise from left): Bortsch Broth from the Broadsheet Micro-Kitchen – a collaboration between Cumulus Inc and P.A.M.; Lucy Feagins from The Design Files with Tess McCabe from the Creative Women’s Circle ; Tess with Phoebe from Simply Phoebe; full-house in attendance to hear from Beci Orpin, Lara Davies from Harvest and Clair Wayman
