Week 18: LBD with neon, leopard print and an umbrella

It’s Week 18 of the BusiChic Little Black Dress (LBD) Project where I’m wearing a LBD to work once a week for the whole year to share 52 different ways of styling this staple for the office. This week, I’m bringing colour into the workplace.

One of my favourite runway shows at L’Oreal Melbourne Fashion Festival (LMFF) was the Frankie Parade which I blogged about in this post. It was full of colour and eye-catching prints which I hoped to incorporate into my work wardrobe once the chill of Autumn set in; which is where we are now.

Week 18: In a LBD outfit inspired by the colours of this aztec-print brolly!

Week 18: Bring colour into the workplace with a neon jumper and co-ordinating umbrella!

I don’t normally purchase head-to-toe looks however the umbrella and jumper from gorman co-ordinated so well while the leopard-print belt provided the contrast that I thought would work well with my LBD from Bento. I made the necklace myself by pairing a chain necklace from diva with an antique rhinestone watch that I bought at a flea market in Berlin.

This look came about because of the umbrella, truly. I had been trying to avoid carrying an umbrella as they’re tricky to juggle when also trying to juggle handbags and photograph stylish people. However umbrellas are a pretty important accessory when commuting to work in rainy weather! Those following me on pinterest will know that I recently pinned gorman’s aztec print umbrella which I think is a wonderful take on the brolly carried by Asher Keddie in her portrayal of Ita Buttrose in last year’s hit mini-series, Paper Giants: The Birth of Cleo.

I quite like being matchy-matchy, hence I was drawn to the jumper that matched the umbrella. The shopgirl was clever in suggesting the leopard-print belt to add some welcome contrast and I thought I was good to go! So good in fact, that I shot this whole look on the weekend prior to actually wearing this look to work – usually I photograph on the Saturday after 😉 Then I had a gander at the May issue of In Style Magazine who featured this same jumper and I was inspired to update my look by adding in a necklace to add more definition around the face:

As I learnt from In Style: wear a necklace with bright tops to help frame the face. What do you think?

There are a lot of elements going on in this week’s styling of a LBD for the Contemporary Business Wear environment. Is there too much going on? How would you bring colour to work with a LBD?

  1. Your umbrella is so adorable! 🙂

Ohhh Cheryl – I love this…the pop of colour on a dreary winter’s day is enough to brighten anyones mood, and yes I am a fan of the animal prints – what a great combo – stylin’ girl!!

  3. I think this is great! Definitely not too much colour at all. I love the matching jumper and brolly! 🙂

The necklace is a great tip! I like the layering of a jumper over a dress look, I’m excited to try it out when the weather gets cooler here. At the moment it’s only cool enough to consider that in the evenings, we’re having a bit of nice weather.
