Week 29: Coco Chanel wore a hat to work

In Week 29 of the Little Black Dress (LBD) Project I explore the wintry options of covering up my LBD for the commute to work. Check in each day this week to see how I top things off with a different style of hat as worked by style setters like entrepreneur and timeless fashion doyenne, Coco Chanel!

The entrepreneurial Coco Chanel, inspiration for women around the world and today’s work hat style.

Ahhh Coco Chanel! The fashion designer  and entrepreneur who liberated women from fussy fashions by streamlining the wardrobe with staples like the Little Black Dress, Breton fisherman striped tops and straw hats. Her style consisted of simple basics embellished with strand upon strand of costume jewellery. She was often photographed at work wearing a hat with a cigarette dangling from her lips. Today I’ve layered up the LBD project with a hat inspired by her style.

Emulating Chanel’s hat style with a structured hat with contrast ribbon and brooch.

I feel like the broader style of Chanel’s hat lends itself to business chic outfits quite nicely. Imagine this hat paired with a wide-leg man-style pant, crisp white shirt and patent leather pumps with a leather compendium or portfolio in tow. In the meantime, here’s a full-length shot of my layered up LBD avec chapeau à l la Chanel!

LBD rugged up with a hat in the style of Coco Chanel for the commute to work.

What do you think of Chanel’s style?

As for my tribute work ensemble, I’ve layered a Country Road wool blazer and faux-fur Alannah Hill scarf over my Bento LBD and accessorised with Camper “Twins”, Belle Bijoux handbag and hat from Scally & Trombone in Melbourne.

We’re halfway through this week and my series of styling of my Little Black Dress with yet another hat. Have any of the hats inspired you to wear a hat to work? For more LBD Project outfits, click here!

Many thanks for the loan of hats to Scally & Trombone.
