Christina Butcher at Voices of 2013

Greetings BusiChic,

Happy Friday! I don’t know about you but personally I’m ecstatic that we’ve made it!

Now I’m often asked “what does Smart Casual look like?” So I’m pretty pleased that I’m wrapping up this week’s conference work style with the Smart Casual chic-ness of one Christina Butcher of Hair Romance, Nail Romance and most recently Mr and Mrs Romance!

I like how Christina shows Smart Casual chic can consist of great basics (jacket, top and pants that fit well) done in different colours and textures. Seriously, have a look around and you’ll be surprised by the number of people who wear pants that are faded, scuffed or torn at the hem or simply don’t fit them properly! The way to remedy this is to look in the full-length mirror and see whether you need tweaks… or new pants. And I say this because it happened to me recently! I was in a Gorman store wearing a pair of cords that I’d just bought less than a fortnight earlier, when the shopgirl kindly suggested that I might want to try a size smaller. I did and was then able to see how much the pair I’d bought had stretched and lost their shape. Kind shopgirl exchanged my pair for the smaller pair without any hassle – what a champ!
Christina wears leather jacket from Italy, striped top from Muji, Pants from Zara, Shoes are Marc by Marc Jacobs, Prada bag. Silver bracelets are from Mexico and those dainty rings are Karen Walker and Le Fashion Truck.
In Christina’s previous life, she used to work in corporate property but now runs her own digital publishing business, Romance Media. Be sure to check out her eBooks to inspire you to romance your hair! Christina advises that her old corporate wardrobe was very black and I shopped at Cue, Witchery and Zara. A world apart from the more casual gear she gets to wear now, including a lot more colour!
“Be the kind of person you want to meet.”
– Christina’s favourite quote // and she’s total gem to meet x
Christina is a prolific blogger bursting with DIY inspiration for your hair. This is an area that I’m looking to work on – even especially growing my hair out to make it easier to experiment with new styles. Naturally, given the opportunity, I asked Christina for her favourite work-appropriate hair styles:
1. I started the Twist & PIn when I was working in an office. It’s so quick to do and it keeps all your hair up neatly. One of my favourite styles is this French roll twist & pin, shown here in curly hair – thought it works well in straight hair too. There’s a video tutorial here too – I also like wearing a bun for work and this braided bun is a great twist on a simple style –
Don’t forget that Christina also runs!
As for nails, I think it’s best to keep your nails simple for work but ombre nails are a super easy way to do nail art that won’t be distracting – Paint a different colour on each nail in a gradual ombre tone for subtle nail art.
So what’s next for Christina?
My next hairstyle challenge starts on 1 June and I’ll be doing 30 buns in 30 days so there will be lots of work appropriate styles there too. I’m also writing a hairstyle book which will be out for Christmas and speaking at Hair Expo. There’s also more travel ahead as my husband and I are working on Mr & Mrs Romance. I don’t like to sit still 😉 // OMG Christina, this is all very exciting news! Congrats on going for gold and can’t wait to see this all come about ! x

  1. Great article! Is there anything Christina isn’t awesome at? Probably not, but she still remains so likeable and lovely. Rachel x

  2. Thanks so much for the lovely feature Cheryl! And love Gorman and their awesome customer service too! x

    • Thanks for being your inspiring self, Christina! Look forward to catching up with you and Mr Romance later this year xx

  3. Love Christina’s look. Love. And snaps to Gorman for that exchange. That’s customer service right there!

    • Thanks Nikki – I think that you’re two fab women who do really well at avoiding wearing black. Or is it just that non-Melburnites don’t wear as much black? I don’t know the answer but I know that you both always look wonderfully vibrant! And yes, so nice to get customer service! xx
