Smart Casual sees spots

Happy Friday, BusiChic!

For many this might mean it’s Smart Casual day which is why I thought that I’d feature an appropriately-attired BusiChic for this rather tricky of dress codes.

Jess works in PR – that’s Public Relations for those of you unfamiliar with this creative profession! Last month I gave a talk on the topic of what to wear to work and was asked to specifically address help shed light on what “Smart Casual” means. LifeStyled and Fairfax Fashion editor, Paula Joye, calls it “MUFTI” which means “civilian clothing” i.e. what one wears out-of-uniform. I think that Jess has nailed it – opt for what you’d wear on the weekend but POLISHED. Avoid the faded and scuffed. Incorporate stylish accessories like a great pair of sunglasses, cosmetics and shoes. If you’d like to add extra structure, a black blazer or similarly structured jacket is your friend.

Jess wears:
Coat – Princess Highway, purchased at a Dangerfield outlet
Top – Borrowed from a friend, similar here.
Pants – Dr. Denim, purchased at FAT
Shoes – Mimco
Sunglasses – Karen Walker’s ‘Anytime’ sunglasses, similar here and here.
Three minutes with Jess:
1. What industry do you work in? I work in PR at a Cremorne based agency,
2. Favourite stores/brands for workwear? Alpha 60 and Gorman
3. Favourite quote? Life is what happens to you while you’re busy making other plans – John Lennon (and others)

A simple print top is the perfect piece to wear with your good jeans on Smart Casual Dday. The polka dot are the quirky print alternative to the literally more straight, stripey print. Here are some pieces from the internet inspired by Jess’ spotty top:

I love loafers so have included a few different styles above including ones made out of cork! How interesting! Seriously I’ve been raving about loafers – a great alternative to ballet flats – so much that my boyfriend has observed, “it’s like you think they’re better than sliced bread.” 😉

Have you had a good week a work, BusiChic? I’m leaving work early today to get my last rabies vaccination – before scooting of to visit Yishan, celebrate Den’s birthday then three years of Pozible! What are you getting up to? xx

Follow BusinessChic:

  1. I love seeing the smart casual outfits, very relevant to me for weekend wear because I have to wear a yucky work uniform during the week. Polka dots and loafers make me swoon!

  2. I think Jess looks fabulous. Love the polka dot shirt with the black pants and jackets. Particularly love the bright red lip. Its the perfect pop of colour. I too love a loafer and am particularly partial to a metallic loafer!
