The early-bird shift with Lauren Brain

Greetings BusiChic,

I am very much trying to convert my night owl ways into early bird ones in the hope that it’ll give me more time to get things done. One of my favourite things to do to encourage me to get up is to switch on the radio. I like being woken up by good music and the vibrant voices of radio people. So like me, have you ever wondered what early morning radio people get to wear to work? Wonder no more, BusiChic –  some insight today from the very fabulous Lauren Brain!

Lauren Brain, for those who might not necessarily recognise the face-to-the-voice, is  primarily a journo and newsreader for the breakfast show on Nova100 plus blogger and creator of, and a columnist for Furst Media’s Fashion Journal. Wow, woman gets lots done, doesn’t she! And she gets up every day at 4am!!!

You do so many things! How did you get started?

I studied journalism at Newcastle University and started working in radio there as soon as I graduated. I worked for the ARN network (Mix/Gold104) in Melbourne for 3 years before coming to Nova. The fashion side of things has evolved organically through my passion for it, and involvement in the media. BusiChic fashionistas may recall that Lauren was a face of the L’Oreal Melbourne Fashion Festival in 2012!- Cheryl

What’s your workplace dresscode? What did you wear for your job interview?

You should SEE some of the things people wear to work at the hour we arrive! The dress code is very casual, so I don’t have specific “work clothes” – I essentially get to wear my regular clothing to work every day. I remember exactly what I wore to my interview (which was also very casual): a simple t-shirt, jeans and blazer.

How long does it take you to get ready for work?

I have to be a pro at this, because I’m getting up so early! I have a quick shower, get dressed and do really simple makeup, and I’m out the door in about 20 minutes. I’d rather spend an extra few minutes in bed than doing my hair!

Favourite labels or pieces for your work?

One of my favourite labels generally is Gorman, I have a lot of her pieces in my wardrobe. Apart from that I am lucky to be able to wear jeans almost every day – my current favourites are by AG from Grace Boutique, and Topshop black skinnies. I don’t often wear heels because sometimes I’m literally running between the newsroom and studios!

Your glasses are awesome. Where are they from?

Thank you. I wear glasses pretty much ALL the time, so I have a few on rotation.  The frames I wear most often are by Dita –I also have a few favourites from

Healthy body, health brain. What’s your exercise regime?

In summer I love to swim, I do a km or so at my local pool in North Melbourne as many times a week as I can. And I’m really into Xtend Barre, I go to a studio in Flinders Lane. It’s an hour-long hard-core Pilates class at a ballet barre that focuses on toning. I love that it’s a really hard workout – but because you’re doing it in ballet positions – it feels graceful at the same time.

Favourite cosmetics, haircare, skincare, healthcare supplements?

I have really sensitive skin so I try and keep it as simple as possible. I need a great eye cream (I get up at 4am!), and love Rosehip oil at night. I find By Terry and Curtis Collection foundations the best for my skin, and my ultimate everyday lipstick is MAC in ‘Syrup’. When it comes to hair care, I can’t live without my Klorane dry shampoo and my Muk straightener and Argan Oil shampoo.

What’s next for Lauren Brain?

I’m focusing on my writing at the moment, both the Fashion Journal column and my blog. The column is a fairly new addition so I’m working on getting that right. And with MSFW and Spring Racing season around the corner – I’m sure things will get very busy, very soon!

  1. I feel like such a doofus!!!! I didn’t realise THIS is the Lauren I listen to on Nova reading the news every morning! I know she was the face/blogged for LMFF last year and in the usual ‘Norlin style’ was too shy and nervous to go up and say hi when I saw her at the Target Gok event last week. I love what she does and wow! 4am? Even I’m still asleep at that time. Great post Cheryl!

  2. I’m such a big fan of Lauren Brain – love her presenting and her style! Thanks for this great insight into her wardrobe for work

  3. I’m not usually a fan of Sportsgirl but hot diggity, that yellow jumper is GORGEOUS. I like how she paired it with the white shirt and bling-y necklace 🙂

  4. Isn’t she FAB! Love your work Cheryl!
