Inspired by Maggie Gyllenhaal

Today’s BusiChic stood out to me with her retro-inspired look.

It turns out that Joye, who works as a data analyst in the public sector, is inspired by Maggie Gyllenhaal’s office style in the film, Secretary. Great inspiration – Joye’s comment led me to start pinning workwear looks that Maggie has rocked in her films to date… and I think that I almost downloaded a virus in the process which goes to show that Maggie’s office style is so good it’s become linkbait!

Now onto Joye’s business chic look as inspired by Maggie Gyllenhaal:

My blouse was from Savers actually! I’m a keen op-shopper.
Skirt was from Etsy, part of my favourite suit, which was made from an original 1940’s pattern.
Shoes (which I’d just bought that morning!) were from Myer, their house brand Basque.

These styles are office appropriate because the wearer is covered up with longer-length skirts and non-revealing blouses. That said it isn’t all frumpy as va-va-voom body shapes are celebrated through the snug fit, characteristic of that era.

Where do you shop to create your office style?
I love retro styles, so I tend to buy workwear from Etsy, or Pinupgirl Clothing online. I love local small-business brands Hot Couture and Doll Deluxe too.
What are the hardest working items in your wardrobe?
High waisted skirts are a favourite. They flatter my figure and look neat and professional. And things that don’t need ironing! A nice suit and a couple of soft blouses.
Make up for the office?
I like to wear winged eyeliner, and my favourite is Illamasqua Precision Ink.
I also love Joye’s tattoos which work beautifully with her office look. I’m currently working on a piece about tattoos in the workplace – get in touch if you have any input!
What do you think of Joye’s office style?

  1. Wow. This is such a great example of style and refinement. I particularly like the length of sleeve and the apparent effortlessness with which Joye wears this look.
