What’s On: The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier: From the Sidewalk to the Catwalk

The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier: From the Sidewalk to the Catwalk exhibition is now open at NGV until February 8, 2015.

Today marks the opening weekend of a fashion exhibition at NGV International that I hope you all go and see!

Jean Paul Gaultier

Much has been said about the designer so I will keep it simple. The exhibition is wonderful because it allows you to get up close to the clothes so that you can experience the expert craftsmanship at the Haute Couture level. Marvel over leopard-print entirely crafted out of beads, the intricacy of his corsets and the execution of Punk clothing and S&M-inspired looks using techniques normally reserved for the A-list.

What makes this exhibition so worth seeing is Gaultier’s vision of society. As exhibition curator, Thierry-Maxime Loriot shares in the audio guide, Jean Paul’s humanity shines through in this exhibition, sharing his view of an open society where all beauty is free to express itself without judgement or prejudice. That the designer looks past “what is in fashion” and “conventional beauty” he hates clones) and seeks out individual beauty – celebrating the beauty in what makes us different; appeal to me as a street style photographer – heck as an individual.

A BusiChic snippet from the exhibition

The exhibition is comprise of seven rooms, each expressing a different facet of Jean Paul’s design career. Here are some images of an outfit in the Punk CanCan room which explores the Paris-born designer’s spiritual connection with the punk scene in London.

NGV Shop

NGV Shop Gaultier Display

I do enjoy a post-exhibition browse in a museum gift shop and the NGV Design Shop is full of gift-worthy bounty right now. The exhibition books capturing key looks and essays on the exhibitions are always top of my list and the Romance Was Born Activity Book is wonderful to inspire creativity!

Forget something that you wish you bought? Visit the NGV Online Shop!

I’m going to make another visit to the museum later today to hear designers from the Romance Was Born: Express Yourself exhibition (which also opened this week) speak about the influence of Gaultier on their work. Hope to see you there!
