Now Trending: Capes from Coats to Blankets

Long-time BusiChics will know that I am partial to a good cape.

So you can imagine my excitement when Michael Kors sent a number of incredibly chic coat variations down the runway as part of his A/W Ready to Wear 2015 collection:

ONP_5669ONP_5691ONP_5846Such killer styling too in the impeccable way that textured sleeves and collars peek through the capes don’t you think?

Traditionally capes are draped on the shoulders and fastened at the neck while as you can see above, the latest incarnation is a kind of a split-sleeve jacket as there are splits for arms to come through. I find this update is more functional than the traditional cape where arms can get hidden underneath all of the fabric (and the cape itself keeps twisting around as there’s nothing to keep it anchored) and traditional coats as well; the absence of a sleeve per se makes it easier to layer clothing underneath so there’s no risk of getting shirt and jumper sleeves stuck.

Kors was not the only designer to show caped coats on the runway; Mulberry, Marc Jacobs and Burberry Prorsum were some others just to name a few. The capes came in a variety of fabrications and styles: either structured much like a coat (as seen at Kors) or loosely draped as if the model was wearing a blanket. That’s right – fashion is making it ok to wear blankets – in public!

Fortunately for Australians, we are already heading into Autumn – the way the mercury plummeted yesterday afternoon is proof of this! So if you want to start investing in pieces to buy for the coming season, look not further than a cape coat!

Here’s a look at three different ways of styling capes for the office runway:

Caped corporate crusader

Corporate crusaders will be well-armed with structured cape coats like this one by Country Road. Remember to pair with similarly structured trousers and pencil skirts – it’s all about keeping defined lines.

What do you think of the cape coat trend? Is it a hit or miss for you?

  1. I do love the look of the cape but the only thing is – how to keep the arms warm in the dead of Winter?
