Eat: STREAT Melbourne

Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.

– Margaret Mead

Who knew that grabbing a coffee for yourself could help stop the youth homelessness and disadvantage in your own city? Founded in 2009 STREAT does just that by employing and empowering local youth through its coffee roasting, catering and cafe  (four sites and counting!) businesses right here in Melbourne.

I have often walked past STREAT’s site at Melbourne Central (located on the ground floor close to the escalators to Melbourne Central train station) but recently took the time to check out the cafe in McKillop street. Where the Melbourne Central site is highly-convenient to stop through for a takeaway coffee and baked La Madre Bakery good, the McKillop street site is comprised of three distinct dining areas which present a welcome break-out area away from the office.

STREAT at 5 McKillop street has three different seating areas: street view, central and some cosy rooms tucked cosily behind the kitchen.

A peek at one of the back rooms tucked past the kitchen. This space features a couch break-out area and a number of tables – perfect for your next private meeting or working breakfast.

I stopped by STREAT for breakfast which consists of pre-prepared wraps, sandwiches and 5 and Dime bagels. I had a bagel featuring some tasty spiced pumpkin which was toasted upon request.

Celebrating One million customers, STREAT’s “You’re a Good Egg” Campaign

Recently STREAT served its one millionth customer and is celebrating by gifting these “You’re a Good Egg” cards for customers to gift to a “good egg” in their lives. By completing the details on the back of the card, customers detail why this person is a good egg and when the person presents the card at a STREAT cafe – they receive a free coffee. Such a lovely campaign!

STREAT has a number of cafe locations, I visited the site at 5 McKillop street which runs off Little Collins street, between Elizabeth and Queen streets.
