Top 3 “Coffices” with Alex Dawson of Yelp Auckland

Greetings BusiChic,

It’s a busy week here at BusiChic HQ as I’m working on the final installment of Game of Rhones. Yes it’s a bit of a take on that show which I confess I still haven’t gotten around to watching but which actually goes to show that this is a very fun wine event which anyone can come and enjoy. And shouldn’t that be what wine is all about? Fun!

One of the many wonderful Kiwis I’ve met to date as part of my job on the ground is Alex Dawson, Community Manager at Yelp Auckland.

For those who are unfamiliar with Yelp… Yelp is a free app that can help you find anything from a back-alley noodle house to a trusty-worthy builder. It all started in San Francisco and is now active in 32 countries, having just launched in the Phillipines earlier this week.

Alex’ role as the Yelp Auckland Community Manager is to come up with creative ways to shine the spotlight all the great things happening in Auckland. Whether that’s by partnering with local events like Game Of Rhones or hosting FREE parties to showcase awesome local businesses. As a newbie to this city, I’ve already attended one Yelp event and it’s been a wonderful way to be introduced to great businesses and of course – locals!

Business Chic recently sat down with Alex Dawson, Yelp Auckland Community Manager who we interrogated for her list of favourite “coffices” – coffee offices – cafes that function well as offices for meetings and getting some work done!

Alex’s list of “Coffices”

Welcome Eatery

This is actually a recent discovery but it’s gone straight to the top of my list of coffices. It’s run by super friendly folk, the coffee is on point (Supreme) and they’ve got free wi-fi! My one recommendation? Made sure you try their daily soups. With flavours like spiced tomato and chickpea with shredded lamb and tzaziki they’re worth leaving the office for!

Quay St Café

This is my go-to for more “serious” business meetings or catching up on emails. Ideal location (Britomart), free wi-fi and perhaps most importantly, decent sized tables that fit both your laptop and your notebook! Their salads are the perfect brain food and great for a quick meal on the go. Just beware – it can get swamped with corporates at lunchtime.

A longtime favourite, Kokako is Grey Lynn stalwart. With a delicious vegetarian menu that focuses on organic and sustainable produce, I always plan my work dates here around meal times. As for the coffee, it’s roasted across the road so it fresh as fresh can be, and they’ve got free wi-fi!

Grey Cape Street Style Auckland

Alex wears a mix of NZ and international labels: Cape: Kate Sylvester | Shirt & Other Stories | Pants: Country Road | Bag: Mat Nash | Shoes: eeeep, no idea! The label has worn off but I bought them from Blackbox Boutique in The Department Store about 8 years ago

Alex’ favourite part of her role as Yelp Auckland CM? “…hard to choose but I love organizing events especially when there’s an opportunity to share a business owner’s story and passion with our community. It’s just all round good vibes.”

Yelp Auckland is the official check-in partner for Game of Rhones Auckland on this Saturday at Shed 10, Queens Wharf, Auckland. Yelpers who check-in to the event on the day will go into the running to win a pack of Riedel glasses valued at $240. Hope to see you there or subscribe for updates on events in your city!
