The Real Girls Guide to Money by Effie Zahos

International Women’s Day is next week and there are many things to be proud of in 2019. Before I get onto that, I thought it was really important to highlight what I think will be a valuable book that is out in-stores today (March 1)!

I am a fan of financial commentator and Money editor Effie Zahos – I find her columns engaging, relevant and simply practical to follow. So I was excited to hear that she has a new book out The Real Girls Guide to Money seeking to help women navigate their finances to afford those designer shoes but more importantly, how to manage finances around dating, falling pregnant and falling out of love and other catastrophes.

“One in three Aussie women retire with no superannuation, leaving them facing poverty,” Zahos says. “As the mother of a teenage daughter, I want to equip women to take control of their finances.”

“In the book I tackle each stage in life, from getting your first job and falling in (and out) of love and starting a family to planning for those golden years.”

Financial commentator and Money editor Effie Zahos

  • Your three-bucket approach to successful budgeting
  • Five spending triggers and fixes
  • Mix-and-match strategies to get that home deposit
  • Your guide to shares, ETFs, funds, property and fixed interest
  • 10 ways to boost your super without putting in an extra cent
  • Parenting: from prams to P-plates and everything in between
  • Five fiscal date nights you must go on
  • How to deal with divorce with a clear head, not a broken heart
  • 1+2+3 = your retirement plan
  • 26-week money makeover with weekly challenges to kickstart your finances

Each chapter contains a “if you can only do one thing, do this” activity which is helpful for the time-poor among us! The other section I am most curious to check out is the 26-week money makeover which is comprised of saving or money-making tips which will have your finances thanking you because money is something that you should not just set and forget.

“The best thing about this money makeover challenge is that you get to pick which tip you want to act on each week. There is no specific order. If you feel you need more time, then simply take two weeks for each challenge and you will have the whole thing wrapped up in 52 weeks.” Who else is in with me?
